Loony Toons

Article from Making Music, November 1986

Oh ye searcher for the weird and wonderful sound, do you know who has some really good ones? Fred, Wilma, Tom, Jerry, Muttley, He-Man and Road Runner, that's who. Seriously, next time the Flintstones, Tom and Jerry, or any other good cartoon strip is on, forget the visuals and harken to the sound track - not the music, but the special effects noises. When Barney Rubbles' feet go through the bottom of his car, or Wil E. Coyote goes through the bottom of a cliff, what bizarre sound has the studio chosen to accompany the event? You'll soon find they've got some standard favourites which are complex, but not impossible to reproduce on today's synths. It's just that you would never have thought of putting the knobs in those positions. Get the noises right, play them to people, and a strange thing happens. The sounds are weird, but people half recognise them - little lights come on in their ears. It's probably because they've had years of soaking up cartoons on their mothers' knees, (messy mother) and the sounds have sunk in. There are some good noises out there. You only have to Yabba-dabba-doo.
