Blancmange go instrument building. Lesson one. "We used to make our own... big, long things made out of wood, working off guitar pickups with two layers of Sitar strings, and we used to use Scalextric hand controllers to control a little motor that would run over the strings and make them drone." Yes, Stephen, but was it programmable???

Dave Stewart saves the whale: "The funniest thing I've ever made a song from was singing through a fuzz-box. It sounded like whales — Annie thought it was a recording of whales. I had this funny rhythm with this 'uuuhhhhhhh' sound on it, a very strange atmosphere. It's not on a record yet, although it may well end up on one. It sounds like the dead of night at sea, noises underneath, and nobody I played it to could guess what it was, they were guessing all these strange kind of instruments. And I said no, it's me singing through a Coloursound fuzz-box."
"I remember when I was about eight I got a tape recorder," says Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. "It was the first little reel-to-reel you could get, with batteries, very small. I went running up the street recording everything like dogs barking and people talking. I ran back into the house and played it, and when I heard it I wet myself — that's God's honest truth. I couldn't believe that I'd just recorded reality in time and then played it back in my house. Later on I had it under the bed-clothes, listening to the dogs barking again. Ever since then I've been obsessed with tape recorders."
Spaced-out Derek Forbes of Simple Minds: "It was hard to get into slapping on my Alembic at first because the strings are so close together, but now I'm playing the Alembic more than ever. When I go to the others now I find the string spacing too big! I've got three Precisions: one fretless; one fretted; and one half-fretless, half-fretted. It has 10 frets, and then it's fretless up the top — and I've just put EMGs on it. I got it for where I need fretted and fretless within one song, but at the moment I'm tending to use all fretless or all fretted for each song."
