Pianos | |
Article from International Musician & Recording World, November 1985 |
The pianoesque voice continues to be a very important part of the average working keyboard player's store of sounds and it is still hard to find (on any but the most expensive keyboards), a piano preset that compares to the sound of a good, purpose-built electric/electronic piano. Hence we have included the few electronic pianos with MIDI facilities which aren't strictly 'home keyboard' models.
'Sampling synths for the masses' has always seem like a good idea, and with the SX-PV10 Technics have undoubtedly made a good effort to make that possible.
Although there are slight problems with noise and glitching, the 10 voices offered are really very credible: Acoustic Piano, Electric Piano, Harpsichord, Clavinet, Vibraphone, Glockenspiel, Acoustic Guitar, Jazz Guitar, Steel Drum, Banjo. In addition there's a 3-position 'harmonic control' (tone control), 3 degrees of stereo chorusing/phasing and key transpose. A good idea is the 5-position sustain switch which allows a closer approximation of the decay characteristics of the instrument being replicated.
Considering the price, the voices on the SX-PV10 are extraordinarily good. Never have I heard such a convincing acoustic or electric guitar voicing on so low cost an instrument. The acoustic piano is undoubtedly the best in its class by a long way, and all the other voices are generally unusually impressive.
If you want the variety of voices and don't mind the lack of touch response (it's not as bad as you might think), the SX-PV10 is unbeatable.

Though not overly stunning, the HP-100 is certainly one of the more musically satisfying electronic pianos at the price and offers the benefits of built-in stereo chorus and instant key transpose. Line outputs allow connection to a large external amplification system whilst line inputs make it possible to plug other instruments through the HP-100's own amp and speakers. MIDI IN, OUT and THRU sockets are provided.
