The 1000-piece Drum KitArticle from International Musician & Recording World, June 1985 |
Simon Phillips is considered to be going some when he uses a 14-drum kit, but Roland's Digital Percussion puts you in onother league...
In the simplest terms, Roland's DDR-30 system could be described as two acoustic and two electronic drum kits built into an electronic brain which allows editing to a practically infinite number of individual sounds.
The way it works is there are four PCM recorded voices for each sound in the 'kit'. The kit comprises bass, snare, and four toms. But once a voice is selected, it can be edited using a large edit wheel on the front panel. Amplitude, Decay, Gate Level, Gate Time, Release, Pitch, Bend Depth, Bend Time, Dynamic Sensitivity, Attack, Bass Equalisation and Treble Equalisation can all be changed. Which means you can effectively customise your own kit. An on-board memory means that you can store up to eight versions of each voice and in addition the DDR-30 can memorize 32 combinations of the sound of each voice.
The Roland digital percussion system gives unprecedented versatility whether you need electronic or digitally recorded acoustic sounds. The 'feel' of the pads and the touch-response is what you'd expect from Roland's experience in this field. In fact, all the signs are that Roland's digital percussion is going to be the most successful thousand drum kit ever made.
