Article from Recording Musician, February 1993

I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time and trouble to fill in the RM readers' questionnaire printed in the December '92 issue. Your response was overwhelming, with more questionnaires still dropping through the letterbox every day. And though we haven't yet finished collating and analysing all the information received, a number of very definite trends are emerging in terms of what you want from a magazine.

As I have long suspected, many of you, like me, are guitar players who have moved into keyboard playing and MIDI sequencing as a means of producing high-quality music recordings at home. Our most popular articles are undoubtedly those that deal with the practicalities of recording and the vast majority of you would like to see us doing even more in this area. You confirm that we have pitched the level of technical complexity about right.

Most of you declined to fill in the section saying what you'd like to see less of, though one pet hate that did surface was ads with '£ Phone for Price' in them. I can only agree with you. What might be helpful is if such ads at least showed the normal retail price of the item in question, which would give a better guide to how much you were really saving when you phoned.

Needless to say, we're already fine-tuning the content of the magazine on the basis of what you've told us and we're currently on the case of some of the interviews you've said you'd like to see.

I was personally very encouraged by how many of you still play live on a regular basis and, best of all, at just how many of you were not regular music magazine readers before finding RM. Our commitment to meeting your needs doesn't end with the occasional survey, though; if you have any comments or suggestions, please give us a ring and tell us about it. Likewise, if you have any technical queries, we'll be only too happy to talk to you. If we can help, we will; if we can't, we'll try to find a man who can.

On a different note, you'll notice that we're responding in this issue to another need that's been expressed by many readers — an outlet for getting their original music heard by someone other than family and friends. You can find full details of our new Readers' Tape Exchange on page 80 and an order form in the Free Classified section on page 83. The service is designed not only to give you exposure for your own music, but also to satisfy your curiosity about what your fellow readers produce in their home studios! You asked for a service like this; we've provided it — now do yourself and fellow musicians a favour and use it.
