That Was Then | |
Article from Making Music, December 1987 | |

This is 18 year-old Steve Marriott of the Small Faces, snapped in a dressing room practising that ever-useful B-major chordal thang. Now, not only did the relatively youthful Steven use a rather smashing looking Gretsch Tennessean (positively a bargain back in them 1960s-style music shops), but it's clear that he also made wide and effective use of Sunsilk Shampoo. Despite the pensive look, Mr Marriott's beat combo was enjoying big success at the time of the photo with their first hit, 'Watcha Gonna Do About It?', which got to number 14 in September 1965. And good things were on the way: 'Sha La La La Lee' got to number three the following February, and their first number one, 'All Or Nothing', hit in summer '66. Steve told an interviewer at the time about the hardiness of his Gretsch. "We played this working men's club near Sheffield and I was just going into 'Please Please Please' when this bloke stood up and shouted, 'Bloody row, chuck t' group off and let's have tombola.' I was so mad I fetched the Gretsch a hefty kick — didn't seem to do it any harm though."
