The A&R Men

Article from Making Music, December 1987

Paul Morley, "I don't really do A&R", ZTT

ZTT's MARKET SHARE (Jul-Sep 1987): Much less than 1% in both albums and singles; leaders in that period were RCA (singles) 7.5%, and Epic (albums) 6.7%.

SIGNED IN 1987: "Nobody."

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? "Personally, I'm looking for something that combines the spirit that music had a few years ago with something that takes us into the 21st Century. One of the reasons that I haven't signed anything this year is because of the strange state of the industry.

"Look at the Casio ad on the TV. A few years ago it was a real daring thing to be in a band. Now it's more adventurous to be a bank clerk."

ADVICE TO TAPE SENDERS: "Make sure that you put it in a box. It's amazing how many come in wrapped round with sellotape or something. If somebody's taken a bit of care about the presentation you can tell there's a certain decency and dignity there."

WHAT DO YOU LISTEN FOR PERSONALLY: "Something that's quite maniacal. This is why I'm not really an A&R man. Today it's all to do with the sound and not the content. As the sound has become technically more brilliant, the content has become more primitive. Take Rick Astley."

FAVOURITE RECORD TODAY: Nina Simone 'My Baby Just Cares For Me'. "It's in the charts; it's got a plasticine video, that's what a record like that needs now."

TAPES TO: Kym Seligman, ZTT Records, (Contact Details).
