Article from Sound International, August 1978 |
We've left The Producers out this month to give International Musician a chance to catch up.
So what's in an alternative? Naturally enough it's as well to understand what usually goes on, to be sure that we really need an alternative. So consider: taken down to its basic level, the 'normal' relationship of record company/agent/manager to artist/group/individual is one of exploitation. And that we can certainly do without - just scratching the surface reveals the damage that such exploitation can effect on creativity. So what's in a 'product'? The merest mention of the word is enough to sum up succinctly the standard record company attitude to 'marketing units'. They're talking about music, and that's not good enough. So what's in Sound International? If all this seems close to the heart then use us. Communication is the most valuable weapon if we're going to start taking back some of this dissipated power — so get communicating: read us, write us, be us.
