PRODUCT: Allen & Heath GS1 8-buss Mixing Console

The GS1 is a true in-line 16/8/16 configurable desktop console. The new desk features 8 main mono XLR/line input channels with phantom power, insert points and 3 band EQ with sweepable mid-frequency control, 4 main stereo line input channels with 2 band fixed EQ, additional mono line input channels (tape returns) and four stereo FX returns with balance and level controls.

The GS1 has MIDI muting and 6 function keys with 3 modes of operation: Patchmode (for saving mute patches), MIDI Machine Commands (for controlling MMC compatible tape machines), and MIDILEARN (enables function keys to to be customised to MIDI commands for sequencers).

The Audiomate is a new low cost motor fader system available in 8 channel controller units. Patchable into any console's insert points, Audiomate has a MIDI interface allowing faders to be assigned as MIDI controllers. This would be ideal for use with software systems and digital audio workstations. It can also be supplied to console manufacturers in component form for factory fitting to an existing console.

This is a new range of strippable studio cables. Versions for analogue and digital applications are available. Cables range from four pairs to 52 pairs. Each conductor pair has its own aluminium-polyester foil screen bonded to the inside of the jacket. This incorporates a special Z-fold construction with a shorting fold which they claim dramatically reduces signal leak and improves high frequency performance.

Technics' new sound module offers 200 sounds and 100 rhythm patterns, a 16 track 19000 note sequencer and a composer section. Features include techni-chord, one touch play, auto harmony and sound edit. The SM-AC1200 is designed to be portable and is suitable for most MIDI applications.

Topaz owners can now enjoy the benefits of VCA fader and mute automation, with a new system which runs on a 386 or faster PC with Windows. The system requires minimal installation, and uses a 1U rackmount controller. Synchronised against MIDI timecode, the system is capable of replaying fader events with frame accuracy and mute events with 1/4 frame accuracy. Smoothing algorithms have been utilised to eliminate zipper noise.

PRODUCT: Martin Audio EMI50 Sub-Bass System

The latest addition to the EM series, the EM150 is a compact sub-bass unit and is designed to be used in conjunction with the EM15 and EM25 full-range speaker systems where extra low frequency output is required. The unit will extend the frequency response of these systems to below 45Hz. It has separate left and right 8 Ohm inputs which can be connected in parallel with respective left and right speakers. Alternatively, the left and right inputs can be externally connected in parallel turning the EM 150 into a 4 Ohm mono sub-bass. External crossover not necessary.

This is the smallest product in Quested Monitoring Systems' range. It is a nearfield monitor that incorporates two low frequency drivers, together with a ferrofluid damped 28mm soft dome high-frequency driver. Each drive is enclosed in its own chamber to eliminate any potential intermodulation distortion. The electronics are housed in a magnetically shielded steel and aluminium pod which is bolted to the back of the cabinet. The bass and HF units are driven by amplifiers that can deliver 75W and 50W RMS respectively.

This is a new kind of portable signal processor that claims to bring professional reverb into a low cost unit that is palm sized (5" x 5.5"). The MR-1's algorithms are primarily based on the Acoustic Room Modelling technology developed for the RXR Elite.

The MetroMix M660 is a powered, rack mountable mixer that can deliver 650W RMS. For non-rack users, an optional 'top box' is available to aid transportation. The front jack panel is moveable and can be relocated on the back of the unit. Features include six input channels feeding a built-in power amplifier with 325 Watts RMS per channel, XLR and unbalanced 1/4" inputs and each channel has an input gain control with peak LED, a 3-band EQ and three aux busses plus the channel level control.

PRODUCT: Digitech RP-10 guitar preamp signal processor

The RP-10 is a compact foot controller that combines S-Disc processing with an analogue compression and distortion section for quality tone. A volume style pedal allows the user to control up to ten parameters per program. Each parameter can be manipulated by range and polarity to allow morphing from one sound to another. The RP-10 has 24 bit signal path/48 bit internal data transmission and a digital four-band parametric EQ. Effects include whammy and wah-wah, and three kinds of distortion.

PRODUCT: Yamaha YDG2030 and YDP1006 Rackmout EQs

The YDG2030 is a 2 channel 30 band graphic EQ and the YDP1006 is a 2 channel 12 band digital parametric EQ. Both of them offer 40 front panel memory locations for EQ settings and can be remotely controlled by MIDI. QS1 software, available in both MS-Windows and Macintosh versions, allows a network of up to 31 EQs - any combination of YDG2030S, YDP2006s, DEQ5/5Es, and D2040 digital crossovers to be controlled by a computer, via the Y-485 serial control bus.

E-mu systems have announced the release of the ESI-32, a 32 voice sampler featuring Emulator IIIx audio resolution at an entry level price. The ESI-32 boasts up to 32 megabytes of RAM in SIMMS, compatibility with Emulator IIIx, Emax II and Akai S1000/S1100 sound libraries, two channels of 128x oversampling sigma/delta analog to digital conversion, 32 4 pole digital resonant filters, time compression/expansion and virtually distortionless pitch transposition over a 10 octave range.

The ESI also promises expandability via a number of upgrade options including alternative internal 3.5" Syquest 270 Mb removable hard drive and the inclusion of a SCSI port and S/PDIF Digital in/out.

The software has been improved and now offers a fast, easy to use interface with audition sample from disk and 10 front panel playback keys. Look out for an review in THE MIX in the next few months.

This is a good quality audio system specifically designed for the dancing market. Both the CD player and the tape machine are rack mountable and have + and -10% of pitch. They can even be controlled by a remote control wristwatch - the sort of gadget only previously seen in Bond movies.

This new DJ deck features a direct drive AC servo motor with 1.6 kg of torque. Other additions include a floating suspension tone arm, field replaceable pitch control, an analogue pitch meter, quartz lock, detachable platter light, soft touch start/stop button and custom designed foot vibration insulation. Based on the Sessionmaster recording preamp, the sessionette enables the guitarist to achieve a wider range of tones with limited hiss and hum. The amp also has an optional humbucker emulator circuit and 9v DC regulated outlet to power effects pedals. The cab contains a 12" speaker and has 85 Watts of output power.
