Roundhouse Recording Studios has been a legend in recording circles ever since its inception in Camden Town in 1974. After 21 years of producing hits from this location underneath founder label Bronze Records offices, Roundhouse has moved to the City of London. A purpose-built complex has been utilised to provide recording areas of differing sizes, in a variety of configurations. Virtual photography was used to design the layout of the studio complex before any work was begun, focusing on details such as placement of all internal fixtures and fittings, and the colour scheme. The navy blue and buffed ash finish was finally chosen for its mood-enhancing effect.
The new complex boasts three studios and two control rooms, plus a digital room for editing, using the SADiE D-to-D recording system. The control rooms feature SSL desks, Urei and Yamaha NS10 monitors, for professional results. The Studios are logically arranged around the two control rooms, with a clear view between musicians and producers, and can be configured for differing working setups. Studio One is the keyboard room, featuring a Steinway Grand and Hammond C3, and 4 channel foldback system, while Studio Two can hold up to eight musicians and also has a 4 channel foldback system for ultimate flexibility.
Studio Three consists of a control room and overdub room for serious production work, and comes equipped with a host of outboard effects and processing units. Lexicon studio quality reverbs are much in evidence here, their PCM70, LXP1 and 480L occupying pride of place, but there's also a well featured rack with everything from Yamaha's excellent SPX990 and Roland's SRV2000, through to Eventide Harmonisers and Flangers. Outboard processing here includes Drawmer Noise Gates, dbx de-essers, Urei 1176s, Aphex's Aural Exciter and there's also the ubiquitous Technics SL 1200s for dance maniacs. Overall, the studio provides facilities to produce any style of music, from traditional rock through acid jazz and on to dance and techno.
An added attraction is a new service from the Saffron Hill site, in the form of The CD Show Disc. For a meagre £20.00, Roundhouse will produce a showcase CD, including cover artwork, from your master tapes. The cover artwork includes an inlay sheet for essential information such as band biography and so on, to give individual artists and promotion companies the perfect tool for promotion. Presentation is all-important today, and The CD Show Disc could well become an essential tool for new talent chasing after that first deal. It's all indicative of the forward thinking that has gone into every aspect of the new Roundhouse.
