E&MM Cassettes - now online!

Vintage 40-year old cassettes

by Ben | 21st January 2022

We now have more of the E&MM cassettes that were purchasable extras archived and online. Tapes #1-#6 that were produced for first first year or so of issues are up - we still need #7, #8 and the "Cassette Sampler" so if you have any of these lurking in a forgotten draw, please let us know!

"Electronics & Music Maker is the first monthly publication to produce its own cassettes that will provide a unique aural complement to the magazine. Produced in our own recording studio, these C60 cassettes will allow you to hear the sound of instruments and electro-musical effects in our features and reviews."

These were all originally produced and compiled by Mike Beecher, and while the extended organ demo pieces are, er... not really my bag, there is still some fascinating stuff to hear - Fairlight, Linndrum and PPG demos, FX, computer and electronic circuit noodlings, recordings and demos from home musicians including Steve Howell & Ian Boddy, and excepts from professional works, Warren Cann playing his Syntom, a Roland visit and even recorded demos from the Frankfurt Music Fair in 1981! (The Yamaha GS1 sounds amazing!)

I don't want to highlight too much here, as like the rest of the archive I like to let people have a root around and discover interesting things for themselves. But if you can't find some vintage nuggets of interest (and to sample!) in here, you're not really trying..!

As ever, the cassettes are playable from the sidebar on the issues they are associated with, and the individual tracks that are related to individual articles are also playable on those articles too. And unlike the original tapes, you can skip tracks and go to the stuff you're interested in directly by clicking on the track names.

Unlike the Electronic Soundmaker tapes, which came free with the magazine, and have been archived online for quite some time, there are no online archives of the E&MM cassettes, and as these didn't come free with the magazine, but were ordered separately, they've been much harder to come by.

Thanks to Pete Shales and Christian Farrow for supplying the tapes, and Mike Gorman for digitising #1-#5.
