A guide to some of the new gear to be released at this year's APRS show.
The APRS show is with us once again, and the recording industry is now experiencing the usual spate of activity that heralds the release of brand new gear from many companies.
Aces have announced that a new ½" mastering recorder, called the FML1202, will be unveiled at the show. As yet, however, there's no indication as to the price fixed for the unit. Also new from Aces is an in-line 32:24 mixing console which boasts five auxiliary sends. Once again full details will be announced at the show. For the PA market, they have introduced two new powered mixers; the CP512 is a 12:2 format giving 285 Watts per channel and the smaller CP308 is an 8:2 design offering 150 Watts per channel. AHB will have several new models on show. The Keymix system will be making its first appearance at a UK show. This is an expandable rack mounting system that features programmable auxiliary buss routing. The popular System 8 range has been expanded to include a 16:8:16 format and a 24:8:16 format both with full 16-track metering and additional features. The CMC range has also been expanded, to include a 24:16:2 desk with 16-track monitoring and a 32:16:2 version with 24-track monitoring. An optional programming unit, the CMR will be shown for the first time. MBI personnel will be on hand to outline the radio station design and installation service available from MBI on a turnkey basis and the new model Series 24A mixer will be on show. Akai will be at the APRS with a vengeance, showing the eagerly awaited S900 8-voice MIDI Multiple Point Sampler. Capable of 12 seconds at a sampling frequency of 40kHz, 24s at 20kHz, and 48s at 10kHz, it features a maximum of 32 different samples or split point programmes. Editing features include one shot/looping/alternating with ADSR/loudness, velocity cross-fade, positional cross-fade, attack pitch offset, LFO, filter and sample merge. The S900 uses 12-bit linear technology and comes complete with a 3.5" disk drive fitting into a 19", 3U rack mounting box, and of course it's MIDI. Also on the Akai stand will be their new fully programmable 8-channel mixer, featuring complete MIDI compatibility and a SMPTE time coding option. Levels, pans, 3-band EQ, sends, returns, aux inputs and multiple effects loops are all programmable and may be recalled at the touch of a button. With their 14-track rack mountable recorder with DBX, ML14 auto-locator, and GX912 master mixdown cassette deck this promises to be an exciting stand. AKG are demonstrating their new range of microphones with pre-amps and capsules as the central focus, including the new C460EB developed for use in the 'digital recording age'. Also on show will be the TDU 8000 time delay unit, and the AKG range of headphones. Details: AKG Acoustics Limited, (Contact Details).
Audio Kinetics now have a complete range of synchroniser systems to cover all areas of machine control and visitors to their stand will be able to see the industry standard Q-Lock 4.10, the Eclipse Audio Editor, the computer assisted Mastermix, Timelink Electronic Gearbox, and a new low cost two machine synchroniser called the Pacer. At Audio Services they have an updated list of their new and second hand studio equipment bargains. Also featured will be the Fostex and Tascam range of equipment. A special feature will be the use of Synchronous Technologies' SMPL system which implements SMPTE to MIDI and controls audio to video for post-production suites. Autograph Sales, as exclusive European distributor for Meyer Sound Laboratories Inc. and UK distributor for Klark Teknik will be demonstrating the latest software update for the DN780 reverb, the new amp and speaker package from Meyer, and in addition to this Autograph will exhibit Brooke-Siren's versatile DPR402 dynamics processor and the Micron CNS radio microphone system. Dolby Labs will be exhibiting their highly successful Spectral Recording system (SR) which is a transparent noise reduction system said to put analogue recording in the same league as digital in terms of sound quality. Also on show will be the new Model 380i A-type noise reduction module incorporating NRI, a system for silently switching the noise reduction in and out of circuit during replay. The Model 390 dedicated Dolby C unit will be introduced at the show and this is expected to extend the benefits of noise reduction to the previous generation of U-format VTRs. Stand alone NR units are also available for most of the popular 1" helical VTRs. In addition to these new products, Dolby will be exhibiting items from its existing product line. Don Larking Audio Sales are exhibiting a fully operational studio set-up featuring the latest Soundtracs automated 24-track console. There will also be the usual wide range of effects including the new Bel delay line/sampler/sequencer. Details: Don Larking Audio Sales, (Contact Details).
Graff Electronic Machines' Gem Sapphire: the high speed cassette copier which was successfully launched at the AES show in Montreaux, and the Gem Diamond expandable stereo copier will be demonstrated. Details: Gem, (Contact Details).


HHB Hire and Sales will exhibit the complete range of Sony digital processors. This includes the PCM-F1 and the PCM-701ES as well as the new SLHF950 Super-Beta VCR. Also displayed will be the complete compact disc mastering and editing system and CLUE, the computer logging unit and editor. They will also exhibit the entire range of Amcron power amps (including the Micro-Tech 1200, 1200L, 600 and 600L. There will be also be a demonstration of the new Techron TEF12 spectrum analyser/computer. Also on show will be the range of PZM microphones, the PCC160 phase coherent cardioid mics and the new GLM products.


Also on show will be a comprehensive range of signal processors from a variety of manufacturers. Details: HHB Hire and Sales, (Contact Details).


Platinum are exhibiting their Platinum Level IV range of consoles, which are essentially top quality recording desks designed to meet the needs of professional multitrack. The mainframe system offers their customers a great degree of flexibility when it comes to choosing or upgrading a system and all the modules are interchangeable. One outstanding feature is the inclusion of a tape monitor on every channel. Details: Platinum, (Contact Details).
Professional Audio Ltd will be exhibiting gear from Electrospace Developments Ltd, FM Acoustics Ltd amplifiers and crossovers, SCV Audio processing equipment, Unisound microphones, NKA AM radio simulator, Signature series monitors, and an entire Renkus-Heinz PA system at Nomis studios. Roland (UK) have demonstrations of their new Music Processing System with Chris Palmer, and are showing the Boss Micro Rack series including a world first for their new pitch shifter/delay and the SBX10 and SBX80 sync units. For keyboardists they have the new keyboard sampler, the MKS20 piano module and the MC500 MIDI recorder with built in floppy disc. Details: Roland (UK) Ltd, (Contact Details).

Shuttlesound are showing several new ElectroVoice products this year including the PL4 miniature omnidirectional condenser microphone. The E-V PL10 is a dynamic mic with a cardioid response designed for music recording and maintains a very flat frequency response over a wide range. The PL10 is virtually free from proximity effect. Another new product is the E-V 8108 mixer which is a versatile rack mounting design tailored to the needs of the professional installation market. Of course a cross section of E-V products will be on show and there will also be a display of the Alphatron range of products which include DI boxes, splitters and phantom checkers. Also for the first time in the UK will be shown the exciting new Saje Memory Console and the Racky Console which was introduced in prototype form last year. Details: Shuttlesound, (Contact Details).

Solid State Logic will be demonstrating their complete range of audio consoles for recording, video post-production and broadcast plus the optional expansions of Total Recall, the new Events Controller which provides up to 32 multi repeatable contact closures with individually adjustable pre-roll times, the Programmable Equaliser and the Real Time system which allows complex sequences of preset fader levels and mutes to be executed from a single set of controls. Sony digital audio equipment will be the major attraction on this stand. The PCM series, Compact Disc mastering equipment, and digital tape anlyser will be demonstrated. But analogue equipment has not been neglected and on show are the MXP-2000 Broadcast and Post-production console, the MXP-61 12-channel mixer, APR-2003 Centre Time Code 2-channel recorder, TCD-5PRO Stereo/Mono cassette recorder, and the established range of Lavalier microphones. Soundcraft will be exhibiting all sorts of new goodies. To start with their 'Studio Series', there's the Saturn multitrack tape recorder, apparently the first ever analogue recorder to use digital control and the new TS12 mixer; baby brother to the TS24 console which will also be displayed, alongside the SA series of power amps. A new addition to their 'Performance Series' is the Series 800C PA console which will be exhibited with the Studio 4 stage sound console. Next we have the 'Production Series', which features the SAC2000 radio production console, the TV24, an in-line console that enables multitrack recording and monitoring to take place during live to air transmission, the Series 200B console and the Series 20 mastering machine. Lastly we have the 'Musicians Series', the latest addition to which is the Series 200SR mixer, an adaptation of the Series 200 for live sound, incorporating a new output module. Also on display will be the Series 600 mixer, featuring an integral patchbay and the Series 500 with a new stage monitor input. Details: Soundcraft Electronics Ltd, (Contact Details).
