Article from International Musician & Recording World, September 1985 | |
On the stage at Wembley last month were thousands of pounds worth of expensive and interesting gear and hundreds of rich and famous stars. They're all covered in our special four-page report on what was quite possibly the gig of the century — Live Aid.
You'll have watched it on TV, like millions of others, and hopefully you've contributed something to the appeal for which it was all held. And now it'll be receding into the history of Pop like every other massive event ever held — the Beatles at Shea Stadium, Altamont, Woodstock, The Band's farewell gig, the Stones at Hyde Park... the list goes on.
But this one was for a good reason; and its success has proved that the music industry can get out of its sequin-lined pit for long enough to take a look at the plight of the rest of the world and do something positive to improve it.
We here on the musicians'side of the fence would like to add our voice to the applause and also to the appeal. Even though the gig is over, don't forget the cause. If you can help by doing your own appeal, do. Or if you just find a spare quid in your pockets, send it off. Make sure that Live Aid was a start, not an end in itself.
