What's new in the recording world.
Audio 86 is a new exhibition to be held at Olympia from the 12th to the 16th November. On show to the public will be the latest in all forms of hi-fi, digital sound, laservision, TV and in-car entertainment, but the show will also feature records, video tapes, tape, compact discs, and live bands.

Blue Suede Music, the distributors of Tokai, have set up a new subsidiary called Blue Suede Music Products who will be handling the American Guild and Japanese Fernandes guitars, and also the exciting new Sundown range of amps as used by Allan Holdsworth and Jan Hammer and designed by former Mesa Boogie man Dennis Kager.

Icon Designs have a new compact 6:2 mixer on the market. The A4 is designed specifically for the home recording market and features Hi and Lo EQ, a pre-fade/post-EQ Aux, and a post-channel fader mono mix specifically for monitoring purposes as well as the usual stereo output, pan and peak LEDs. This year's Jazz, Rock and Studio Music summer school is being held at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London from Sunday 27th July to Friday 1st August. This year a recording engineer's workshop will be run by Dave Foister (see interview in this issue), the Guildhall's recording engineer and, although no experience is necessary, a basic knowledge of electronic and audio equipment would be useful. Enrollment is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost is £100 for the course alone, and £165 for course and accommodation. The London Rock Shop is now marketing a new product from U-Music called the UMI Convertor, a simple hardware convertor from MIDI to CV, Gate and VCA/VCF. The UMI Convertor will alternatively act as a MIDI input channel convertor and sells for £245 including VAT. So now you can get that fat Mini Moog Bass sound run from a MIDI sequencer! NAMM this year will as usual be packed with exhibitions of all the worlds' top musical products, and there will be educational sessions and guest speakers. The show runs from June 13th to Tuesday June 17th and pre-registration figures seem to confirm that this will be the best attended show to date. Details: NAMM, (Contact Details).
Peavey Amplification have opened a new plant in Corby to assemble and manufacture some of the company's large range of musical instrument amps, PA amps, mixers, loudspeakers, microphones and effects. Details: Ken Achard, UK general manager. (Contact Details).
Rhino Distribution have been formed from the Rhino Music Spares Company and become sole UK distributors for all Dean Markley products including the new K-20 practice/studio amp. Other new lines are the DOD and Audio Logic range of sound processors, and Whirlwind cables which compliment the ESP guitars and parts, and EMG pick-ups already available. Ross Electronics, the makers of stereo headphones, who have won design council selection for some of their models, are bringing out a new range which includes lightweight models, units specially designed for compact disc players, and a portable radio model. Secondly there's a whole range of MIDI control gear including MIDI channel convertor, MIDI signal filter, MIDI Switch Box, MIDI foot controller with 16 memory banks for MIDI data, a MIDI patch box and a high quality fibre optic cable which prevents noise and attenuation of high frequencies when transmitting in excess of ten metres.

Yet another new product has appeared in the Soundtracs FM series of mixers. Designed for fixed installation or to be fitted into a flightcase, the Soundtracs FM Mixer is available with various permutations of input and output modules. In the mainframe there's room for 14 modules and therefore a number of alternative configurations may be assembled according to the application, such as 8:10 monitor mixer, 12:2 PA Mixer (mono and/or stereo inputs) for instance. Sound Technology are to launch a new Alesis product in the UK but what is it? It looks like a Midiverb, it costs the same as a Midiverb... but it isn't a Midiverb. All that they'll tell us so far is that it is will have an even bigger impact than the Midiverb and has orange writing on it so we'll keep you posted as soon as details are available. 1986 is the 60th anniversary year for Tannoy and they will be celebrating at APRS with a new series of studio monitors: the SGM range, and the DC 100 and 200 models for the hi-fi enthusiast. The new SGM series will consist of the SGM 10B, Little Gold Monitor, SGM 12X, SGM 1000 (replacing both SRM 15X and the M1000), and the SGM 3000 (replacing both SRM 15XB and M3000). Also on show will be the DTM-8, the FSM studio monitor using a 15" Dual Concentric with an additional 15" bass unit, and finally, the Tannoy SR840 power amplifier, capable of delivering in excess of 1.2kW into 4Ω. The Time Machine Microamp's power output has been upgraded to 45W RMS per channel (100W bridged). This modification has been made with no increase in price. Details: Time Machine, (Contact Details).
Toa launched a new condenser microphone for on-stage or studio applications. A YMM musical instrument mic capsule is standard, but optional YMV and YFV capsules for male and female/male tenor vocals are available. Details: Toa Electronics Ltd; (Contact Details).
Whirlwind have introduced a new top-of-the-line instrument cable called the Leader. It comes in 1, 3, 6, 10, 18½, 30, and 50ft lengths with a chuck-style strain relief providing 360 degree clamping around the cable. 18-gauge single-conductor shielded cable is used and they must believe in the product because every cable comes with a 10 year guarantee!
