After much consideration, Gateway Studios have decided to offer some new courses in studio techniques next year. One will deal with synchronising music and pictures, using some of the new cheaper autolocator and synchronisation devices. This will be complemented by Gateway's existing courses on using MIDI. Plans are also afoot to institute a course on MIDI mixer technology. Next year's new courses will also include one on sampling, at first using the Akai S900, but later including many sampling devices.

In addition to all these, Gateway are also planning to run a series of courses and seminars entitled 'Music and the Media'. The first of these is a 5-day course run in co-operation with Sue Biggs Music Production and is called 'Composing and Producing Music for TV Commercials'. Others that are to follow include introductions to composing for film and video, ear training for producers and engineers, orchestration techniques, and arranging and composing rhythm tracks.

Dan Smith, winner of the H&SR School of Sound Recording competition.

At last we can announce the winner of the School of Sound Recording competition featured in H&SR August 86. He is Dan Smith of Castle Bromwich. Although he's only a few weeks into his course, by all accounts he is extremely happy with the course and the teaching. In fact, the School have also instigated another course, this time of very short duration: five days. Students do not even have to be present for the entire course, but can attend those sessions that they think would be most useful to them. Day one starts with basic recording techniques, day two concentrates on effects, day three on MIDI and CMI programming, day four on DX programming. The final day is devoted to advanced production techniques. It's quite a lot to cover in a week! Anybody interested can obtain a prospectus from the school, and any further details on the course can also be obtained from the School of Sound Recording, (Contact Details).
