This is a true stereo effects unit, offering electrically balanced analogue outputs, digital I/O, multi-voice delay effects with reverb effects and RAM or ROM storage with a PCMCIA data card. Remember those weird speakers that were featured on the Grid's 'Swamp Thing' video? Here they are again, and available in two versions - House Pod or Techno Pod. The House Pod features one 6 1/2" kevlar bass/midrange cone and a 1", magnetic fluid cooled and damped high frequency driver aluminium dome. The Techno Pod features the 6 1/2" Kevlar bass/midrange cone, plus another 6 1/2" bass driver and a 1 1/4" high frequency driver aluminium dome as above. The D5000's range of functions include extra long delays (specified in sub-millisecond intervals), special facilities such as 'ducked' and 'gated' delays, and an automatic 'sample and hold' capability which enables the last 10.4 seconds of any performance to be replayed. These two follow-ups to the SY85 have the same on-board facilities as each other. The only difference is a 61 note keyboard for the W7, and a 76 note keyboard for the W5. Both keyboards are designed around Yamaha's AWM2 synthesis and deliver good quality sample-based sounds. Composition and MIDI file playback is handled by an onboard sequencer that is ten times more powerful than that of the SY85, with 16 tracks and a 100,000 note memory. Both keyboards are GM-compatible and will read files from MS-DOS format disks via the onboard disk drive. The unit is 16-part multi-timbral and has 32 note polyphony.

This new piano has ten voices that include pianos and other keyboard sounds and can be played in single, layered and split modes. The new MS-1 is a dedicated 16-bit phrase sampler, designed for realtime remix work and groove sampling. It features eight control pads, and has parameter settings that have been significantly simplified for users not familiar with conventional samplers. The sampler uses a Roland-developed compression algorithm to deliver full 16-bit D/A and A/D sampling capability. Four different sampling qualities can be selected: Super Grade-44.1kHz, High Grade-32kHz, Standard-22.05kHz and Long Play-16kHz. In High Grade mode, an unexpanded MS-1 can sample for approximately 22 seconds. The built-in flash ROM memory retains data after the power has been switched off. The unit has stereo inputs and outputs and MIDI in and out.

The Powerstation offers a mixing console, on-board effects by Lexicon, a 300 Watt per side power amp and eight mono input channels, to handle gain ranging from 0-60 dB. Two stereo inputs are also included, and two aux sends are provided for effects and monitoring. The master section has a seven-band graphic equaliser and a 40Hz subsonic filter across the main outputs, with a steep 18 dB/Octave cutoff, allowing you to create bass-heavy mixes without overloading PA cabs with frequencies they can't handle.
