Survey: 100 Watt Amps

Article from International Musician & Recording World, May 1975

BEAR

Bear are the U.K. Wholesalers for the Dutch Novanex range of amplification. The U100N is a 100 watt amp suitable for any instrument. Measuring 1200cm x 600cm x 300cm, the U100N amp, like the entire range of Novanex amps, is guaranteed for use with bass instruments, owing to its reliable limited circuits which prevent output stage and speaker abuse.

BOOSEY & HAWKES

Boosey & Hawkes market the well known Ampeg range of amplifiers in this country. Chief among these in our 100 watt category is the VT-22, a valve amp with two channels, two inputs with an input sensitivity switch, volume, treble, midrange and bass controls, and a selective midrange switch. The VT-22 also sports built-in reverb and ultra-high switch/boost and cut positions. This model also incorporates two 12" speakers.

The Ampeg's HDV4B, a 100 watt bass valve amplifier, and HDV4 a 100 watt valve amp are also distributed by Boosey & Harkes.

The Laney range of amps are also carried by B. & H. The L100 is equally suitable for lead, bass and organ, and features two channels. The first of these has volume control, a treble boost switch and two inputs. The second has volume control, variable "Klip" control, treble boost and two inputs.

The L100 has on/off and standby switches, and overall presence, bass, middle and treble controls.

CARLSBRO

Carlsbro offer a good variety of 100 watt amps, in both solid-state and valve ranges. The Stingray and Super Stingray twin channel solid-state guitar amps both fall into our 100 watt category. Both models feature independent channels, each with bright and normal inputs, master volume and controllable amp distortion with a footswitch.

Channel one on both models offers volume, presence, treble, middle and bass, while channel two offers volume, treble, middle and bass. The Stingray Super offers the additional facilities of tremelo and reverb, along with the sustain of the standard Stingray as well as a double footswitch.

These two admirable units are also available in the Stingray and Stingray Super Combo amps. These combos offer two heavy-duty 12 in. speakers, especially designed for the unit and the standard Carlsbro amp unit features are all present, with the exception of speaker leads.

Carlsbro's rugged and dependable valve power amps have two models which fall into our category, the 100 TC and the 100 TR. The former is a high power, twin channel lead/bass amp, which boasts a bass boost on channel one, separate bass, treble and volume controls, response, limiter and master presence control, and high and low sensitivity inputs on each channel.

The 100 TR is also a twin channel lead/bass amp, but in addition it sports built-in reverb and tremelo, with speed and depth controls, separate bass, treble and volume controls on each channel, and a footswitch control on the effects.

CBS/ARBITER

CBS/Arbiter market two ranges of amplifiers, the Fenders and the Arbiters. Within these two ranges, any buyer ought to be able to find what he's looking for.

Chief among the Fender 100 watt amps is the Dual Showman Reverb. A "piggyback" amp, it sports 2 channels, normal and vibrato, with four instrument inputs, a separate bright switch in each channel, separate volume, treble, bass and middle controls in each channel, as well as a master volume control, built in reverb and vibrato, and vibrato speed and intensity controls, all this atop two 15" speakers mounted in specially designed baffles. The Quad Reverb amp boasts most of the advantages of the Showman, except that it offers four 12" speakers.

The Super Six Reverb is also basically the same amp, but as its name implies, it sports six speakers, each 10 inches in size.

The Vibrosonic Reverb is really designed with steel and jazz guitarists in mind, who require a wide range and balanced response.

It has one specially designed wide range 15" Fender Professional Series Speaker, and its power output and specifications are much the same as the above-mentioned Fenders.

The Twin Reverb boasts all of the Fender amp features as well, but its two 12" speakers provide a powerful yet compact amp.

Bass players will find that the Bassman 100 is the ideal amp for them. This, another "piggyback" amp, also with dual channels, four instrument inputs (as well as another for bass instruments), a deep switch on the bass channel and a bright switch on the normal channel, master volume control and four heavy-duty speakers in a specially designed enclosure.

The Arbiter range includes The Soundhouse 100 Amplifier. This model combines solid-state circuitry with a valve tonal spectrum, twin channels with four inputs, built-in reverb, bass, middle, treble and reverb controls, and master volume. Its speaker cabinet houses four 12" speakers.

Custom Sound CS700B

CUSTOM SOUND

The solid-state CS700B Musical Amplifier is Custom Sound's contender in our 100 watt class. The hallmark of all Custom Sound products is a plug-in power stage, which enables rapid replacement of the power module in minutes with only a screw driver. The CS700B features two independent channels with gain, bass, treble and presence controls, as well as a sensitivity control and sustain, also with control. The outputs include tape, line, power amplifier and a studio switch. It is rated at 100 watts into 8 ohms.

CLEARTONE

Cleartone distribute the CMI range of amps, and they claim that these amps are "the solid-state amps with the valve sound". CMI's 100 watt has two channels, A and B, for lead and bass respectively. There is a third input for a linked channel and when both channels are operating at full volume, overload can be obtained with use of the master volume control.

CMI also do a 100 watt combination amplifier, which is the same power unit as the above-mentioned amp, coupled with two 12 inch speakers. CMI do not recommend its use with bass guitars.

HH ELECTRONICS

HH manufacture three amps which fall into our category. The IC 100 and the IC 100S are identical in size, weight and power output, but their other differences are important. The IC-100 offers two channels; the first supplies volume for both normal and bright inputs, presence, treble, bass, vibrato, speed and depth control, a reverberation switch with master reverb control and a sustain switch, the second channel also has all of these with the exception of the vibrato, speed and depth controls, but it offers foot switches for reverb/tremelo and sustain.

The IC-100S also offering two channels, offers bright and normal input volume controls, presence and treble controls, a sustain switch and control with high or low level sustain effect. A footswitch for remote switching is supplied. Channel two has volume for normal and bright input, and presence, treble and bass control.

HH's TPA 100D is a silicon transistor amp designed for broadcast and recording, or any audio amplification where high quality sound reproduction is vital. It is D.C. coupled throughout, and has a wide band width, a good deal of negative feedback to ensure stability into loads of any impedance characteristic. The unit is protected from the load mismatch and short circuits by a dissipation limiting circuit.

HORNBY SKEWES

Miles Platting are the Hornby Skewes range of amps, and their V100 is the amp which falls into our 100 watt category. A valve amp, the V100 is versatile, as it is equally suitable for use with lead, bass, organ or general PA systems. It boasts two independent channels with separate volume, treble, and bass controls on each, as well as presence control. There are four high impedance inputs, two per channel.

JENNINGS

Jennings 100

The V.100 is Jennings sole remaining 100 watt valve amplifier. It has two channels — bright and normal.

The bright channel has two inputs and volume, bass and treble controls, while the normal channel has one input with volume control. Reverb is switchable to either channel, and can be taken completely out of circuit by use of footswitch.

The AP100 is a solid-state with one channel. 11 has controls for volume, bass, treble, mid-range and presence, and it's built-in reverb has blend control and is supplied with a footswitch.

The FR100 is also a solid-state amp, and is designed for use with bass or organ. Its single channel has two inputs with volume, treble and bass controls, and it is extremely light in weight.

KEMBLE-YAMAHA

Kemble market the Yamaha range of amplifiers in this country, and there are more of them than any other make. The YTA 100 is Yamaha's chief guitar amp. It offers a separate pre-amp and main amp, and the first of its two channels offers volume, bass, mid-range, treble, volume reverb, tremelo/Waw-Waw intensity and speed control. Both channels sport two-way brilliance selectors, while channel two provides full tone and volume controls.

Organists will find satisfaction in the RA 100, which boasts a truly rotary speaker, with either hand or foot controlled Tremelo jacks, a two-way hum-suppressor power switch, two main and two tremelo speakers, and built-in reverb.

The YBA 100 is the Yamaha answer to a bass player's amplification queries. With continuous sliding bass, mid-range, treble and volume controls, a two-way hum suppressor switch, solid-state circuitry, and Yamaha's prize BE-200 pre-amp, the YBA 100 is easy to use and comes with preset tone selectors.

MACINNES

Macinnes distribute the Amcron power amps in the U.K. and two of their models fall into our range.

The DC300A power amp is widely used in vibration and shaking applications as well as in applications requiring high current pulses or complex waveforms. It has an unusually wide power bandwidth that makes it useful for driving totally reactive loads.

The D150 power amp is a lower powered model, but its power out rating is 100 watts RMS at 8 ohms. It boasts the same low distortion as the DC300A power amp, and can drive any amp no matter how reactive.

ROSE-MORRIS

Marshall is the best known name in the world of amplification and it should surprise no-one that Rose-Morris market everything in the 100 watt range that a musician could want.

It was only recently that Marshall introduced solid-state amps (see our Soundcheck in our March issue) and after eight years, the new bass and lead amps have attracted, understandably, a good deal of attention.

The lead 100 boasts a front panel with master input and volume control combining both channels and a treble boost switch for overdrive and distortion effects. The back panel has a slave output, a direct injection output for feeding a mixing desk and an echo socket. The bass 100 has all these advantages save treble boost and studio switch. The Marshall sound was founded on valve amplifiers, and the models which helped to make the sound are the 1959 lead and the 1992 bass amps. Both of these have four inputs (two per channel), individual volume control for high, treble and normal inputs, presence, bass, middle and treble controls are common to both channels.

Marshall's 2078 100 watt transistorised lead combo marries the above-mentioned Marshall transistorised amp with a cabinet housing 4 x 12 in. speakers, while the 2077 100 watt bass combo marries the transistorised bass amp with speakers of the same size as those in the lead combo, but specially designed for bass use.

ROSETTI

Rosetti's two ranges of amplification equipment, Simms-Watts and Shure, are well established, and both ranges have models which fall into our category.

Chief among the Simms-Watts entries is the G.E. 100 Amplifier. This is a transistor/valve amp which incorporates Graphic Eq. with separate slide controls over eight independent frequencies, as well as full range tone controls. It is possible to pinpoint any desired frequency with complete accuracy on this amp, and some of the frequencies are less than an octave apart.

Suitable for lead, bass and organ is the A.P.100 which has twin output channels, and separate bass, treble and volume controls, as well as master volume and presence controls. Brand new from Simms-Watts are the solid state amps, three of which fall into our 100 watt category.

Chief among these is the P.A. 100 Reverb Amplifier, a four channel P.A. amp with an internal Hammond Reverb unit. There is a separate slide volume control for each channel, with individual bass, treble and presence controls, and a master slide volume control, as well as a reverb switch for each channel and a master reverb control.

The P.A.100 Amplifier also boasts four channels, with individual volume controls, master treble bass and volume controls for overall mixing and front mounted echo in/out sockets. The A.P.100 is a two channel instrument amplifier with a choice of high or low sensitivity inputs on each channel. There are slide volume controls on each channel with master treble, middle and bass controls. Channel two also boasts sustained dynamic fuzz and presence control.

The Shure range includes the Vocal Master, especially designed to meet the vocalist's needs. The amp in this set-up is the 100 watt VA302E6—C, with six input channels with individual volume, treble, bass and reverb controls, along with four anti-feedback switches.

SELMER

Selmer market both solid state and valve amplifiers in this country. In our 100 watt category, the Selmer range includes the lead, bass and SL 100 slave amp, as well as the Selmer power 100.

The Lead 100 offers 2 separate channels with individual high and low instrument inputs, both of which offer controls for volume, treble, bass and reverb, with a 100 watt RMS output.

The Bass 100 also boasts all of the above features, and Selmer suggest that it is at its best when coupled with the Selmer's Bass 100 speaker cabinet.

TOP GEAR

Top Gear retail two makes of 100 watt amplifiers, Hiwatt and the American-made Peavey. The Hiwatt range is spearheaded by the DR 103, which is the most popular Hiwatt model and responds to the professional musician's most rigorous demands. Its 100 watt RMS output is into a standard loud impedance, and its channels include both normal and brilliant volume, bass, treble and middle presence and master volume. The STA 100, a 100 watt slave amplifier is a valve model.

SUN

Sun amplifiers are chief among the lines carried by both Ben Page in Doncaster and Claude Venet in Watford, Herts., and the self-contained A212 falls neatly into our category.

Channel one offers hi and lo gain inputs, a treble boost switch, bass and treble controls. Channel two also has two inputs and a treble boost switch, as well as a three-way gain select switch and a three-way mid-range select switch, and bass, mid and treble switches. In addition, master reverb and master control and a three-way reverb select switch. The unit is fitted with two 12" Sunn speakers.

WHITE

White's Tour Range of sound equipment includes two amps which fall into our 100 watt category. Chief among these is the LW 300. This is a valve amplifier which boasts full sustain at low levels by way of a tone boost, and also offers high and low inputs, six position bass boost and four position tone boost.

The SL 100 is a 100 watt solid-state power amp with short circuit and thermal protection.
