SBX-80 - The Time Keeper

Article from International Musician & Recording World, June 1985

If two rhythm machines won't interface, your arpeggiator refuses to work with your microcomposer and your music won't keep in step with your video, Roland have the solution.

Time and a Half — the SBX-80

The SBX-80 has, since its introduction at the end of last year, solved more problems than Anna Raeburn. Designed as standard apparatus for a professional studio but at £950 not restrictive in price, Roland's new sync box is compatible with almost every 'clock' system in use.

Its primary function is to generate and read SMPTE time code, the standard for the professional recording, film, and video industry. Where time code is present, the SBX-80 will act as clock for any sequencer, arpeggiator, or rhythm machine and keep it in step with a tape or a video. As a time code generator it can also lay down a SMPTE track on video or audio tape to act as a basis for synchronisation.

Versatility was paramount in designing the SBX-80 and consequently it can control the full range of devices from almost all manufacturers, and the spin-off is not only can it make them compatible with SMPTE but it can make them compatible with each other. Or, it can 'interface' electronic equipment with a human musician. Tap a microphone in the desired rhythm and the SBX, plus whatever electronic devices it's controlling at the time, will follow you. Warts, dragged beats, and all.

This is the one rhythm machine that puts you back in the driving seat. Clock the SBX-80 at Roland dealers now.
