burn for the best 12in mixes

They spin them here, they spin them there, they spininin...nipsnips those 12ins everywhere, and Torch Song are a bunch fairly adept at the infamous techno-mix. We asked William Orbit, main instrumentalist in the trio, to name the eight favourite 12in mixes he'd like to load into his personal Walk-AMS while on the tour bus.

Meanwhile Torch Song have risen from the levels of cult single ('Prepare To Energise') through the elevating status of building and owning their own 24 track studio (Guerilla) to a debut album ('Wish Thing') and whispers of collaborations with Sting and Stewart Copeland. Firmer within the pipeline is a theme music project for a video-only movie called ICBM with the option of more soundtrack work on the way. A new album is in preparation, naturally. Mentions of Lincoln Fong within William's list date back two years when Mr Fong was involved in the maintenance of Guerilla. He developed the famous Fong box which coupled a Roland MC4 to a CSQ. And they said it couldn't be done.

Like a Virgin

1 Francois Kevorkian has transformed this track into a dance extravaganza creating suspense and anticipation by knowing just how long to keep the mute button down (or where to join the edit).

2 McLaren put the music on one side and the drums on the other of this 12in, then invited the listeners to participate with their turntables or Dr Rhythms. Although Steve Levine forked out the equivalent of a semi in Neasden to be able to store 24 seconds of Boy George in his AMS, your man on the street can do pretty well with a Bel BD80 and a little patience. DIY is the word.

3 A mix (in the DJ sense) of Herbie Hancock cuts going back to 'Headhunter'... a skilfully put together collage. Check it. For me the drum sound of last year was the sampled cowbell with a load of Lexicon on it. Kept hearing it everywhere.

4 The perfect remix — everything for the critical listener — dance buzz and floating vortex rolled into one disc... just perfect except for the bit after the guitar solo. With mix automation and recall, it is possible to work outside of real time just like painting a picture. On something like the SSL desk, every mix is a remix, really.

5 Awesome.

6 Orgasmic.

7 This 12in is mixed so that every constituent part has fantastic clarity from fiddly hi-hat twiddles in the right hand speaker to cute little guitar fills poking out here and there. All Scritti material has such quality bass lines, but has someone been tweaking the varispeed on those Green vocals? Digital sound storage makes the reshuffling of sound and music easier done than said and this has a profound effect on most remixing, although I reckon there is still massive room for development on the theme.

8 Like eating a sickly cream meringue and finding a spider in the middle. A novel mix, elegantly executed by Mr Lincoln Fong containing some interesting sound effects.
