Article from Sound International, June 1979 | |
Oh well, never mind. Whoever you voted for, the Government got in. It of course remains to be seen what sort of influence the new Tory administration will have on the music industry. One can hazard a guess that, as usual, a Conservative government will be 'good for business'; but that usually means 'good for businessmen' and seldom the people that actually do the work around the place. But we shall see. On the broadcasting front, things may be a little more predictable. The Conservatives are committed to Commercial (or 'independent' as they somewhat erroneously call it) Radio and no doubt we'll see a fair number of new stations announced in the next few months. Hopefully these stations will be inclined towards the support of local acts; some of the existing 'ILR' stations, like BRMB, are very good in this respect, others could be better. Broadcasting in this country certainly offers more choice, and more live acts, but it must be remembered that more radio doesn't necessarily have to mean 'commercial'. There are other, better ways of doing it. Then again there's the possibility of a legalised Citizen's Band in the UK. But keep your fingers crossed especially for those new radio stations: radio exposure is at least useful and with cutbacks in higher education, college gigs may be hard to find (assuming you can afford the VAT on your new PA).
