RIDERS ON THE STORM | The DoorsArticle from One Two Testing, March 1986 |
Coverage cops a classic cut
Yet again a well-known tune gets the One Two Testing dismemberment; this month it's o classic from days gone by - Riders On The Storm by West Coast Weirdos The Doors. To fake this successfully, like most songs, you should adhere to the feel of the original, putting the emphasis on the keyboards and preferably using a 60s organ sound for the Ray Manzarek effect. Unlike Ray, however, it's not entirely necessary to play the bass parts on the keyboard with your left hand; on most sessions the band used a real four-stringed bassist. Guitar fills in the style of Robbie Kreiger should be jazzy and light, employing lots of twiddly bits. Jazz is again the feel you're after on the drum parts — John Densmore's swingy, snare-based fills should be a million miles from the reverbed John Bonham boom-thump style of modern Rock. And lastly, to achieve the ideal effect on vocals I suggest leather trousers and copious quantities of drugs. After a while you could experiment with indecent exposure and you'll find a nice effect to finish off with is death...
